Course Description

10-206-115 MUSIC SYNTHESIS ...concept of digital synthesis, using various software synthesizers. Creating new sounds and instruments for use in song creation in many styles. FM, Wavetable, Additive, Subtractive as well as sampling based synthesis are discussed.

What will I learn?

  1. Examine elements of a waveform and how they can be changed to produce different sounds
  2. Recognize components of synthesizers including oscillators, amplifiers, filters and envelopes
  3. Utilize Subtractive synthesis in song creation.
  4. Utilize sounds from FM synthesis in song creation.
  5. Utilize Wavetable synthesis in song creation.
  6. Utilize Poly Synth Vocoder in song creation.
  7. Utilize Component-Modeling in song creation.
  8. Utilize Sample-Manipulation with Alchemy in song creation.
  9. Construct new sounds with arrangement and layering of synth parts
  10. Sculpt sound with Effects, Compression, EQ, and Saturation
  11. Apply modulation and MIDI control data to music tracks
