Course Description

10-090-302 BASIC SOILS ...course is designed to provide the student with fundamental knowledge of soil and soil composition. Students will study soil types, formation factors, physical properties, biological properties and basic soil chemistry. Units covering tillage, conservation, pH and soil management will also be included. Students will gain the skills required to interpret soil survey maps and recognize qualities of various soil types as well as perform soil sampling, residue measurements, compaction assessments and soil loss determinations per crop rotation guidelines.

  3. Interpret soil maps and surveys
  4. Assess the role of organic matter and microbes in the soil
  5. Assess soil water conditions
  6. Develop a Land Use plan
  7. Evaluate wind and water erosion
  8. Determine erosion control methods
  9. Develop soil conservation plans for specific field or land areas
  10. Examine the use of a soil-less media, such as hydroponic applications
  11. Use agribusiness information and other continuing professional education sources to update introductory soil skills and knowledge
