What will I explore?

NWTC students will travel to Greece during NWTC’s Summer term for two weeks. Greece has been called the “Cradle of Western Civilization” offering students an opportunity to immerse themselves in deep cultural traditions including food, leisure time, the arts, a beautiful climate and scenery and the ability to visit ancient historical sites.  Proposed stops on the itinerary include Athens, a guided tour of the Acropolis, the National Archaeological Museum, the Institute of Public Health, and a visit to the Greek island of Ikaria, known as the island with "the secret to longevity". Ikaria has been officially designated as a Blue Zone for its extraordinarily long-lived and healthy people.

What will I learn?

The proposed program to Greece includes:

  • An introduction to Archaeo-medicines
  • Food Tasting at Athens Central Market
  • Trip to the Institute of Public Health and talk with the Health Minister
  • Lectures at the American College of Greece
  • Ikaria organic farm visit and cooking class (the island's main source of income is goat farming and most people grow their own food)
  • Lefkada Hot Springs - contains natural radioenergic hot saltwater
  • Trip to the University Public Hospital
  • Trip to the Biomedical Research Foundation, Academy of Athens
  • Hiking, Beach Visits and related and photography opportunities
  • Visit several ancient history sites including the Acropolis
  • Praksis NGO Service Learning Project with activities supporting social needs and/or medical cooperation

What's included in the cost?

$3,500 - $3,900 is the estimated program cost, and includes:

  • round-trip airfare
  • lodging
  • international health coverage
  • transportation from NWTC to O’Hare airport and back
  • in-country transportation, such as train, subway, or bus
  • ferry transfer to and from the island of Ikaria
  • entrance fees to program planned activities
  • some meals including breakfast most mornings and 3 planned afternoon/evening meals

Costs do not include: tuition (optional), some meals, personal spending money, and passport fees.

When are the payment deadlines?

  • $300, due within 2 weeks after acceptance. If accepted after January 26th, $1,000 is due by February 10th. 
  • $700 February 10th 
  • $900 February 24th 
  • $900 March 10th 
  • $700-$1,100 March 24th 

Payments will be sent via email by International Programs using Square. 

Payments do not include: tuition (optional), some meals, personal spending money, and passport fees.

Students are responsible for keeping track of payments made/money owed.

What financial support is available?

Apply to the International Programs Study Abroad Grant

  • Awards are typically between $300-$800.            
  • Underrepresented students can be awarded up to $1,000
  • Grant applications are due the same date as the study abroad application deadline. The application is attached to the study abroad application.
  • If you are not FAFSA eligible you can still apply

Apply for FAFSA

  • Pell grant recipients can use any remaining funds to help pay for study abroad
  • Talk to a Financial Aid Advisor by visiting the Welcome Center, SC240 or calling 920-498-5444

Apply to the Foundation Scholarships

  • Awards are anywhere from $500 to $2000!
  • Apply by logging into your my.NWTC, click Finances, and next click “Apply for a Scholarship”
  • Deadlines are April 15th and November 1st

Apply to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

  • Students can be awarded up to $3,000!
  • Applicants must be a Pell Grant recipient and be taking the study abroad program for credit
  • Application deadlines in March and October

Get creative

  • Students can organize a fundraising event
  • Use electronic resources like Kickstarter and GoFundMe
  • Waive holiday and birthday gifts for financial gifts

What are the credit opportunities?

Formal program credit opportunities are available for Wellness and Health Promotion Students and Nursing Program Students. Nursing credits vary on point in the program. All other NWTC program students should ask their individual academic program leaders if credit is available for study abroad.    

All credit opportunities are optional.
