International Student Admissions
Apply to NWTC as an International Student
Follow the steps below to complete your application to join us at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.
Step 1: Choose Your Program
Start by selecting the academic program that fits your goals and interests. See our International programs broken out by academic area to learn more, and contact us by email if you have questions.
Step 2: Apply to the College
Required application materials include:
- Completed application form and US $130 application fee.
- While we encourage you to apply online, students may also email us to request a paper application.
- Proof of financial support.
- Students will need to show financial resources to support their first year of study. Get tuition information and view the Financial Support Form.
- Proof of English language proficiency(for non-native English speakers).
- Students may submit standardized test scores including TOEFL (68), IELTS (5.5), or complete the Duolingo Assessment (95). Students can start in the Intensive English Program. If you have questions about additional proof of language proficiency, please contact us by email.
- Proof of secondary school completion.
- Students may submit original or copies of secondary or post-secondary diplomas or transcripts, or national college entrance score reports.
- Passport photocopy.
Step 3: Apply for Your Visa
A visa is a document issued by the U.S. government, usually at an embassy or consulate outside of the United States. This document allows you to present yourself at the U.S. Port of Entry and request to be let in.
Many students have questions about obtaining their visa. While this step will happen after you have applied and are admitted to the College, we encourage you to learn more about the visa process.
Step 4: Prepare for Arrival

Students currently living outside the U.S.:
Fall semester - June 15th | Spring semester - November 15th
Students transferring from another U.S. institution:
Fall semester - June 25th | Spring semester- November 20th
Application FAQs
Can the application fee be deferred for international students?
No. The application fee is a required part of the application.
Can I defer my offer of admission?
If you can no longer attend NWTC in the semester listed on your I-20, you can defer your admission one time at no additional cost and enter in a future semester. If your visa was denied and there is time before your program start date, you can schedule another interview and present better documentation for a more successful result. If you do not have time before the program start date, you should request a deferral of your admission and your I-20.
To request a deferral:
- Complete the Deferral Form
- Submit a new application International Student Application
- If you are applying within the SAME academic year (Fall to Spring), you do not need to pay the fee again
Will I need to have my school documents translated if they are in my native language?
Yes. You may get diplomas and other certificates of post-secondary completion translated in your own country as long as they bear an official stamp or signature attesting to their validity. Transcripts for credential evaluation must be translated by a professional, U.S.-based organization such as World Education Services.
I sent my application to NWTC. What happens next?
Once we receive your materials, we will send you a letter to confirm the receipt of your application. Your application will be processed by the Admissions office and if you are admitted an I-20 and certificate of admissions will be mailed to you. It takes about one to two weeks for applications to be processed.
Will I have an interview as part of the application process?
No. NWTC does not require an interview or review of oral proficiency in order to be admitted.
Does NWTC admit a fixed number of students from each country?
No, NWTC does not limit admissions by country of origin.
Do I have to attend International Student Orientation?
Yes, an International Student Orientation is designed to help students with their transition to NWTC, and all newly admitted international students are required to attend at the beginning of each academic Fall or Spring term.
When should I arrive at NWTC?
You will need to arrive on campus no earlier than 30 days prior to the first day of classes. You will also want to arrive no later than one week before classes so that you will be able to attend International Student Orientation.
Do I need to submit an immunization record?
No, no record of immunization is required at this time.
Are international students required to take the SAT or ACT?
No, international students are not required to take the SAT or ACT, but students who have taken the ACT or SAT can submit these scores in lieu of taking placement tests during registration.
Transfer International Credit to NWTC
There can be huge value in getting your international transcript evaluated once you get accepted to NWTC. Students have the option to earn credit for equivalent college or university courses they have completed outside the United States. This can save you time and money as you complete your credential!
Step 1: Select a credential evaluator.
Most credential evaluators charge between $150 - $300 for the service. NWTC will accept evaluations from any National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member such as:
Step 2: Submit your transcripts.
Submit your original, sealed international transcripts and diploma directly to an evaluation company a minimum of 30 days before you arrive on campus in the United States. Check with the credential evaluator to determine exactly what documents to submit.
The evaluation process can often take 10-15 business days after all paperwork and payment has been submitted to the evaluation company. Submitting your paperwork before you arrive will help ensure you are placed into the correct courses to start the semester and avoid unnecessary coursework and tuition.
Step 3: Complete course-by-course evaluation.
In order to transfer in credits completed outside the United States NWTC requires a course-by-course evaluation of your international high school or post-secondary coursework. NWTC often also requires course syllabi for courses you wish to transfer in.
- In order to transfer in a course NWTC requires the grade earned to be a ‘C or better’. A grade of ‘C- or below’ will not be reviewed for transfer credit.
- NWTC does not guarantee that you will receive transfer credits from a credential evaluation.
