Focuses on developing various communication skills including speaking and listening. Students practice intrapersonal/interpersonal and nonverbal communication skills through oral presentations, group activities and written projects.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Emergency Medical Technician Refresher

The preparatory aspects, patient assessment, airway management, medical/behavioral cases, trauma care, obstetric/pediatric cases and enrichment topics in basic life support emergency medical care.

Emotional Intelligence

2 cr.

10-520-103 EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE ...This course will introduce the student to the importance of emotional intelligence in the human services field. Emotional intelligence works to increase the studentÆs emotional self-awareness, self-regulation, core values internal motivation, increasing empathy, and building skills for interpersonal effectiveness needed to be an effective human service worker. Students will utilize these basic skills in the human service field to adapt and manage their responses to various situations. Apply reflective practitioner techniques.

Employee Recruitment/Retention

3 cr.

Applies the skills and tools necessary to hire and retain qualified employees. Legal issues, testing, screening, interviewing, selecting and negotiating techniques will be demonstrated and assessed for each learner. (Prerequisites: 10-801-136, English Composition 1; 10-196-193, Human Resource Management)

EMR/EMT 1

3 cr.

Prepares students to perform emergency medical care sanctioned by the WI Dept. of Health Services, EMS Section scope of practice for the EMR/EMT. Includes foundational knowledge and skill application for both EMR/ EMT in the following areas: the EMS system, EMR/EMT responsibilities, legal and ethical standards, patient movement techniques, pathophysiology, body systems and functions, patient assessment and treatment, pharmacology, shock and resuscitation, age-specific patient considerations, special medical considerations, medication administration, airway anatomy and management. Successful completion prepares the learner for WI EMR Certification and the NREMT EMR written examination. 

EMS Fundamental

2 cr.

This course provides the paramedic student with comprehensive knowledge of EMS systems, safety, well-being, legal issues, and ethical issues, with the intended outcome of improving the health of EMS personnel, patients, and the community. The students will obtain fundamental knowledge of public health principles and epidemiology as related to public health emergencies, health promotion, and illness/injury prevention. Introducing students to comprehensive anatomical and medical terminology and abbreviations will foster the development of effective written and oral communications with colleagues and other health care professionals. (Prerequisites: Acceptance in the Paramedic or Fire Medic program; completion of Health Assessment; Corequisites: all 10-531-XXX courses in the current semester)

EMS Operations

1 cr.

This course provides the paramedic student with the knowledge of operational roles and responsibilities to ensure patient, public, and EMS personnel safety. (Corequisites: all 10-531-XXX courses in current semester)

EMT 2

4 cr.

This curriculum prepares students to perform emergency medical care sanctioned by the WI Dept. of Health Services, EMS Section scope of practice for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Includes foundational knowledge and skill application for EMT in the following areas: the EMS system, EMT responsibilities, legal and ethical standards, patient movement techniques, pathophysiology, body systems and functions, patient assessment and treatment, pharmacology, shock and resuscitation, age-specific patient considerations, special medical considerations, medication administration, airway anatomy and management. Successful completion prepares the learner for the NREMT EMT written examination. (Prerequisite: 30-531-100, EMR/EMT 1 with a "C" or better.)

Energy Saving Building Science

1 cr.

This course provides an overview of building construction techniques used to reduce energy consumption and operating costs, as well as how saving energy can reduce a building's environmental impact. Topics include LEED, Energy Star, Net Zero Energy, and Passive House building standards, as well as the HERS rating index. Emphasis is placed on understanding energy bills, heat transfer through a building envelope, heating and cooling efficiency, as well as solar and energy storage technologies.
