Course Description

31-512-328 ST: FUNDAMENTALS 1 ...includes the basic clinical skills needed by the Surgical Technologist in the scrub role. Learners develop skills in identifying basic instrumentation, supplies, drains, catheters, dressings and sponges. Includes practice experience in creating a sterile field, draping, passing instruments and supplies, performing counts and preparing supplies. (Prerequisites: 31-509-302, Human Body in Health & Disease; 10-501-101, Medical Terminology; 31-512-326, ST: Infection Control)

What will I learn?

  1. Integrate safety control to prevent or minimize surgical hazards
  2. Classify basic surgical instrumentation
  3. Perform instrument identification
  4. Apply principles of sterilization
  5. Apply principles of disinfection
  6. Open sterile supplies
  7. Perform surgical scrub
  8. Don sterile gown and gloves
  9. Create the sterile field
  10. Demonstrate care and utilization of disposable surgical supplies
  11. Drape the patient, equipment, and furniture for surgical procedures
  12. Perform intraoperative case management in the scrub role
  13. Perform postoperative case management
  14. Demonstrate the procedures for counting instruments, sponges, needles and other items in the field
  15. Demonstrate care and handling of dressing materials
  16. Perform specimen care and handling
  17. Perform skin preparation for surgical procedure
