Course Description

10-504-153 ETHICS - CRIMINAL JUSTICE ...in-depth study of ethical philosophies and their application to the Law Enforcement Officer’s Code of Ethics and professional performance in the field. Topics include morality, leadership, ethical decision-making, self-actualization, ethics-based performance and the breakdown of ethical conduct.

What will I learn?

  1. Apply ethical elements (Honesty, Integrity, Character) in professional practices
  2. Exercise moral development and appropriate belief systems in relation to law enforcement.
  3. Analyze the role of ethics in law enforcement.
  4. Operate within the professional and legal standards of law enforcement.
  5. Identify key components of the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.
  6. Recognizing unethical behavior (slippery slope, complacency, "retired on duty," minimizing).
  7. Explain the consequences of unethical behavior (stakeholders, career survival, public, etc.).
  8. Execute appropriate decision-making processes and usage of tools in ethical dilemmas.
  9. Identify factors that lead to unethical behavior (drivers).
  10. Apply techniques to overcome barriers in simulated cases (POA, "possible-outcome-alternative").
  11. Analyze scenarios for the purpose of identifying ethical/unethical issues
  12. Employ methods of preventing poor ethical choices
