10-504-132 COURTS/JURISDICTIONS ...development of the American judicial system, the federal and Wisconsin court structure, Wisconsin judicial rules and procedures from complaint to sentencing as they impact police or correctional officers.

What will I learn?

  1. Trace the history of courts in America.
  2. Examine the development of criminal law.
  3. Evaluate the applicability of the Wisconsin and U.S. Constitutions in criminal court.
  4. Differentiate the components of the U.S. federal court system and the Wisconsin court system.
  5. Compare and contrast the U. S. criminal court system and other countries' systems.
  6. Interpret the constitutional rights of criminal defendants.
  7. Analyze criminal court procedures, from the commencement of the proceedings with a criminal complaint through sentencing.
  8. Distinguish the roles and responsibilities of the judge, non-judicial court personnel, prosecutor, defense counsel, victim and jury in criminal proceedings.
  9. Investigate how to prepare for court.
  10. Recognize and apply appropriate courtroom demeanor while testifying.
  11. Reenact the criminal trial process in a mock trial.
