Course Description
10-091-327 BASIC ANIMAL HUSBANDRY ...proper cattle handling and restraint techniques will be demonstrated. Optimal feed, water and ventilation needs discussed. Compliance with industry standards of animal welfare and record keeping will be studied.

What will I learn?
- Discuss how consumerism affects on-farm practices.
- Accept the National Dairy "FARM" Assessment program.
- Identify the "5 freedoms" applied to animal care.
- Examine characteristics of effective standard operating procedures (SOPs), trainings and record keeping formats.
- Describe herdsmanship and stockmanship techniques for safely handling and transporting animals.
- Discuss effective care protocols for newborn and milk-fed calves.
- Assess animals of all life stages for proper hydration and nutrition.
- Evaluate proper animal health treatment protocols.
- Evaluate facilities and environments for animal well-being, comfort and productivity.
- Develop a plan to provide the proper care for special-needs animals.
- Discuss how on-farm practices impact the quality of the animal carcass entering the human food chain.
