College Closing - Severe Weather Policy
In the event of Severe Weather, the College will be using the following policy when closing any of its campuses and/or regional centers. It is NWTC’s general philosophy that we are providing education for work. Like our business partners, we will strive to remain open to serve our customers.
Our district is very large (geographically) and weather conditions can vary dramatically throughout the district. Decisions to close will be made as follows:
- NWTC-Green Bay Campus – President or his/her designee will have the authority to close the College and all other NWTC facilities throughout the district.
- Marinette/Sturgeon Bay/Regional Centers - Dean, Regional Learning or his/her designee will have the authority to approve the closure of the Campuses and Regional Centers.
- The Learning Innovation Center, the Northcoast Marine Training Center, and the Artisan Center – the Dean of Corporate Training and Economic Development or his/her designee will have the authority to close the listed Centers.
In the event of campus or center closings, timely notification of 6:00 a.m. (day classes) and 3:00 p.m. (evening classes) will be given to designated media. Notification will also be sent out via the RAVE alert system and will be posted on the NWTC Website and the NWTC Facebook page as closings occur.
The Marinette Campus Main phone line will be changed to indicate the Campus is closed (715-735-9361). All media are notified by the Marinette Campus Staff.
Regional Centers will change their Main Line Voice Mail Message that the Regional Center is closed.
Any class originating from an NWTC facility that is closed will also be considered closed regardless of location.
In the event of a campus closing, all students and staff are expected to leave when the campus is closed with the exception of facilities and security staff. If the weather is threatening and campus stays open, the choice to report for class or work is ultimately up to the student or staff member. Every effort will be made to help the student make up educational experiences lost due to severe weather conditions. Staff members who choose not to report to work should review available leave options with the supervisor when they return to work.
College closings will not be linked to the K12 system closings, however K12 school closings will be posted on television monitors for the benefit of students and staff who have children in elementary, middle and high school. For K12 classes taught on the Green Bay Campus, individual cancelation of those classes will be done on a case by case basis by the Direct Supervisor.
When the closure is for a full day, benefit eligible and regularly scheduled part-time employees will receive their base pay, including extra assignment pay, for hours scheduled that day. Vacation or personal time will be taken if the employee previously scheduled a vacation or personal day or is on a leave of absence. If an employee called in and is not able to report to work due to weather and the campus subsequently closes for the full day, vacation would not need to be taken.
When the closure is for a partial day, employees will receive their base pay for hours missed from the time of closure to the end of their scheduled work day. Only employees actively at work at the time of the closure for a partial day will be eligible for pay. Vacation or personal time will be taken if the employee previously scheduled a vacation or personal day or is on a leave of absence.
Based on the nature of the closing, some employees may need to continue to perform their work responsibilities and report to or remain on campus.
