New Camps at NWTC Marinette to Inspire the Next Generation of Skilled Workers

In response to increased job demand, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College Marinette is offering new opportunities to introduce students within the Marinette and Menominee area to high-tech career pathways in today’s automated manufacturing industry.
 
Thanks to two grants provided by Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs, as well as support from local sponsors, NWTC Marinette campus will offer two in-person camps this summer for students between 12 and 15 years old.
 
The Electro-Mechanical Camp runs July 12 to 16 and will offer students a chance to learn and develop skills on wiring, electricity, automation, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and design. The students will also be making their own rockets.
 
The Computer Numerical Control (CNC) & Machining Camp runs July 19 to 23. Students will learn hands-on about computer-aided machining and design.
 
“We’re going to design and complete a number of hands-on projects that students will take home at the end of camp,” said Pete Anderson, NWTC instructor. “Students will really see the versatility of machining.”
 
Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs grant is funded by the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, a national organization devoted to helping people discover their interest in manufacturing careers. This grant is designed to help colleges and universities provide camps for young people to explore areas of manufacturing.
 
“The grant asks that we partner with local industries, so the camps are sustainable beyond the grant-funded years,” said Jennifer Flatt, dean of NWTC Marinette. “We are thrilled that our local partners like Waupaca Foundry, BPM, Kimberly-Clark, Winsert, and Great Lakes Custom Tool have all signed on to help sponsor these opportunities. Students will tour some local industries, hear from representatives of others, and learn about careers in manufacturing.”
 
The fee for each camp is $99 for the week. Breakfast and lunch will be provided as well as a free camp t-shirt. Scholarships are available as needed.
