Northeast Wisconsin Technical College Fire Protection Technology student Jeremy Uitenbroek has been named a 2020 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact.

The award honors the achievements of undergraduate and graduate student leaders who have taken action in pursuit of long-term social change, and who engage and inspire others in their communities through service, research and advocacy.

Uitenbroek is a first-year student in NWTC’s Fire Protection Technician Associate Degree program and an on-call firefighter for the Kaukauna Fire Department.

As a third generation firefighter he said, "I knew without a doubt that firefighting and public service was what I always wanted to do."

Uitenbroek added, “I always want to be there to help people and make my life about it.”

He regularly volunteers his time on behalf of NWTC, teaching fire safety education at area elementary and high schools.

“Every time I help someone on a call or in class I always try to take something away from the experience, so I can be even more beneficial to others as I continue to pursue the career as a firefighter,” Uitenbroek said.

His motto is “Don’t train until you get it right, train until you can’t get it wrong.”

Through the Newman Civic Fellowship, Uitenbroek receives a variety of learning and networking opportunities that emphasize personal, professional, and civic growth.

The Newman Civic Fellows Awards are made possible through the generous support of the KPMG Foundation and the Newman's Own Foundation.
