NWTC 5 Tips: How to get rid of holiday stress

From parties to presents, the holidays can be a very stressful time.  Jaime Ehmer, therapeutic massage instructor at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, has five tips to help you have a less stressful holiday season.  

1.    Get enough sleep. Sleep helps keep your mind and body healthy.

2.    Take a walk, even if it is through the mall or grocery store. Exercising stimulates various brain chemicals that may make you feel happier and more relaxed.  Plus if you hit the gym, you won’t feel as bad about eating that extra cookie.

3.    Take time for yourself. Leave the kids at home; go shopping by yourself. Go get a massage or buy someone with gift a massage. Reflect on what the season is about through mediation.

4.    Make a plan. Make a list and check it twice of who you need to buy presents for. or what holiday decorations go up in your house. After the season, put all your decorations in a labeled box that way you know which decorations are where next year.

5.    Don’t overspend. Nothing adds on stress like money. Be honest with yourself and others about what you are going to spend. Instead of buying a gift for everyone in your family, draw names and buy for one person instead. Plus you can put more thought into a gift for one person. 

Ehmer adds remember while, it is the season to be around family and friends, you don’t have to be everything to everyone.  You also have to take care of yourself. So hang there only 390 days till the next holiday season.
