What Black History Month means to us: Celebrating, remembering, and inspiring others

Today is the start of Black History Month, also known as African American History Month. This annual celebration is a time to recognize the achievements and pivotal role of African Americans in U.S. history.

We asked a few of our employees to share their insights on the importance of this recognition.
 

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month is a time to celebrate the roles African Americans have played in the history of this country. It is a time of reflection and celebration of the struggles and success of our ancestors and keeping hope alive for this generation and future generations. Black history should not only be a focus for one month but should persist in our everyday lives.

Why is it important to celebrate Black History Month?

It is important to celebrate Black History Month because we are remembering those who have endured and overcome so much for me to not take what they (my ancestors) did for granted.

I love talking about Black history, because Black history is American history. It's a history that should be shared all the time by everyone.

How do you want to inspire future generations?

I want to inspire others, primarily young people, through tough love. I want to prepare them to be successful in "safe spaces" but also to be successful in "a difficult space." Our true character reveals itself in the face of adversity.
