10-605-206 MEDICAL IMAGING ...Introduction to medical imaging systems such as X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, and CT. (Prerequisite: 10-605-211, Biomedical Instrumentation 1; Corequisites: 10-605-214, Medical Networking; 10-605-213, Biomedical Instrumentation 2; Prerequisite and Corequisites do not apply to the X-Ray Service Technician Advanced Technical Certificate)

What will I learn?

  1. Explore the hierarchy of the medical imaging profession as to its modalities, professional organizations, role in medicine, history, etc.
  2. Summarize the various x-ray photon interactions as they relate to biomedical engineering
  3. Examine the operation of x-ray system components including the x-ray tube, generator, fluoroscopy, exposure control, image receptor and operator interface
  4. Predict the impact upon image quality with various changes in radiation prime factors and exposure conditions
  5. Explain the nature of electromagnetic radiation and its characteristics related to radiosensitivity and image production
  6. Compare and contrast the process of digital image production using various digital technologies including fluoroscopy and computed radiography
  7. Evaluate medical image quality using established quality control measurements
  8. Explore the imaging modality of computed tomography (CT)
  9. Explore the imaging modality of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging
  10. Examine modern breast imaging technologies
  11. Explore the basic operation of medical ultrasound technology and its clinical usage as a diagnostic modality
  12. Discuss radionuclide imaging and its importance as a perfusion imaging modality
  13. Discuss the challenges of using radiation as an oncology tool
  14. Explore angiographic imaging as an imaging modality
  15. Examine the role of biomedical engineering in a contemporary medical imaging department
