Course Description

10-110-106 LAW-FAMILY ...exploration of family law practice; marriages and other domestic relationships; contracts affecting marriage; legal actions affecting the family including annulment, divorce, legal separation, paternity, adoption; laws relating to children and reproduction; drafting pleadings and documents relevant to family law practice; ethical issues and the paralegal's role in family law practice. (Prerequisite: 10-110-101, Paralegal Intro/Legal Ethics with a "C" or better.)

What will I learn?

  1. List the requirements for marriages and other domestic relationships
  2. Differentiate types of contracts affecting marriage and other domestic relationships
  3. Differentiate annulment, divorce and separation actions, and their effects on marriages
  4. Use effective checklists for gathering information relevant to legal actions affecting the family
  5. Draft pleadings and documents relevant to the domestic relations field.
  6. Apply the laws of child support, legal custody and physical placement
  7. Describe state laws and procedural steps relating to the various methods of establishing parent-child relationships
  8. Explore state laws relating to children
  9. Explore the laws relating to reproduction
  10. Describe the function of the paralegal in family law practice
  11. Describe ethical issues commonly arising in a family law practice.
