Course Description

10-815-203 CERAMICS 4: ADVANCED ...Refine your abilities and work toward gaining the expertise needed to operate a contemporary studio. While students will apply their developed skills to produce a series of work and continue to participate in group critiques, the emphasis will be on testing and analysis of a variety of glazing materials and advanced firing methods and practices. Students will discuss creating glazes from raw commercial materials, identify glaze defects and faults, practice loading and unloading an electric kiln, and recognize alternative fuel sources for raku firing versus firing an electric kiln. (Prerequisite: 10-815-202, Ceramics 3: Intermediate with a "C" or better.)

What will I learn?

  1. Fire pottery to a lasting state using alterative firing methods.
  2. Generate button tests on glaze materials.
  3. Create line blend tests on selected materials.
  4. Identify glaze defects and faults.
  5. Discuss creating personal glazes from raw commercial materials.
  6. Apply previous skills to produce a series of work.
  7. Load and unload and electric kiln.
  8. Discuss firing an electric kiln.
  9. Analyze alternative fuel sources and their characteristics.
  10. Fire using one or more alternative fuel source – Raku firing.
  11. Participate in a group critique.
  12. Discuss best practices for being a professional ceramicist.
