Course Description

10-815-201 CERAMICS 2 WHEEL THROWING …Build on the core skills of working in clay with a focus on wheel throwing methods. Students will practice centering and opening various weights of clay on the potter’s wheel, collaring and shaping to throw specific forms such as a tall cylinder, bowls, plates, and cups, applying texture to a piece on the wheel, and trimming a finished foot on a thrown object. Instruction and exercises will also include altering forms made on the wheel, pulling and attaching handles, principal glazing practices, and identifying formal elements of pottery through discussion and self-critique. (Prerequisite: 10-815-200, Ceramics 1: Hand Building with a "C" or better.)

What will I learn?

  1. Center 3, 5, and 7 pounds of clay on the wheel
  2. Open 3, 5, and 7 pounds of clay on the wheel, preparing the base for a cylinder, a bowl, and a plate
  3. Throw a cylinder equal to or greater than 8-inches high
  4. Throw a variety of forms, including a bowl, a plate, and a cup
  5. Apply texture to a clay form while on the wheel
  6. Alter a clay form made on the wheel
  7. Define formal elements of a clay pot
  8. Trim to create a finished foot on a thrown object
  9. Pull and attach handles to thrown forms
  10. Glaze functional wares – dip, pour, and brush methods
  11. Self-critique a selection of completed work

Class Notes

This class is taught through a combination of in-person and online instruction. Students will attend live portions of the class at the dates, times, and location specified. Students will be required to attend a minimum amount of open lab sessions at the Artisan Center for the in-person portion of class.
