Course Description

10-091-378 ANIMAL HEALTH ... introduces students to the study of dairy cattle health. Covers animal anatomy, basic immune function and common diseases. Emphasis will be placed on early detection and symptoms for heifer, transition cows, lactating cows and calves. (Prerequisite: 10-091-327, Basic Animal Husbandry)

  4. Describe the anatomy, function and procedures for identifying dysfunctions of the animal nervous system.
  5. Describe the anatomy, function and procedures for identifying dysfunctions of the animal immune system.
  6. Describe the anatomy, function and procedures for identifying dysfunctions of the ruminant musculoskeletal system.
  7. Conduct metabolic disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment procedures for dairy animals.
  8. Conduct contagious disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment procedures for dairy animals.
  9. Conduct parasitic disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment procedures for dairy animals.
  10. Demonstrate procedures for obtaining diagnostic samples from dairy animals.
  11. Select appropriate antibiotics, vaccines and parasite control products to manage dairy animal health.
  12. Demonstrate procedures for administering medications to dairy animals.
  13. Develop dairy facility biosecurity guidelines and practices.
  14. Summarize dairy herd health program information for industry and public audiences.
