Steamfitter - Apprenticeship
Looking for a high-demand, high-skill trade? As a Steamfitter apprentice, you’ll work with piping systems that carry steam, gas, and other pressurized substances. You’ll get paid while learning how to install, service, and repair these systems in homes, businesses, and industrial buildings.
What does a Steamfitter do?
Steamfitters install and maintain piping systems that move high-pressure steam, gases, or liquids. You’ll often work on heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems — especially in large buildings or plants. In this trade, you’ll learn how to:
- Read and follow blueprints and technical plans
- Install and repair steam, heating, and cooling systems
- Weld and fit pipes safely and accurately
- Understand pressure systems and temperature controls
- Follow jobsite safety rules and codes
What are the qualifications?
To apply for the Steamfitter Apprenticeship, you’ll need:
- A high school diploma or GED® (submit a copy)
- A valid driver’s license (submit a copy)
- Minimum age: 18 (or 17 with a high school diploma)
- To meet the following benchmarks on the Accuplacer exam:
- Arithmetic – 66
- Reading – 66
- Algebra – 33
Note: Testing may also be completed through NWTC or the MCA office. Entry requirements may vary.
How long is the program?
This is a 5-year apprenticeship that includes:
- 8,600 total hours
- 8,100 hours of on-the-job training with a skilled mentor
- 540 hours of paid related instruction (day school)
- 300 hours of non-paid related instruction (night school – 80% attendance required)
Where is this apprenticeship offered?
This apprenticeship is available in the following areas:
Brown, Door, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Oconto, Calumet (part), and the Point Beach Power Plant.
(Note: Calumet County includes all but the northwest section north of Stockbridge and west of Highway 57.)
How do I get started?
Step 1: Apply – Complete the steamfitter apprenticeship application and meet the qualifications listed above.
Step 2: Interview – Applications are reviewed by the Apprenticeship Committee. If you qualify, you’ll be invited for an interview and may receive a Letter of Introduction.

Classes wherever you have an internet connection.
- An in-person career experience, such as an internship, practicum, or credit for prior learning, may be required.
- Some online courses may be held at specific dates/times.
- Day
- Classes between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
- Evening
- Classes between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
- Weekend
- A combination of online classes and Saturday and/or Sunday classes.
- Full-time
- 12 or more credits per term.
- Part-time
- Fewer than 12 credits per term.
