What does a Sheet Metal Worker do?
Sheet Metal Workers help bring buildings to life. While they don’t build the structure itself, they add important parts that make it functional — like heating and cooling ducts, vents, gutters, and flashings. In this trade, you’ll learn how to:
- Cut, bend, and form sheet metal
- Build and install heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
- Use computerized machines like plasma cutters, brakes, and presses
- Read blueprints and follow job specifications
- Solve layout challenges using math and problem-solving skills
What are the qualifications?
To apply for the Sheet Metal Apprenticeship, you’ll need:
- A completed ABC of WI Apprenticeship Application
- EEOC Supplemental Information Form
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED/HSED or homeschool verification)
- Seniors must show they are on track to graduate
- Valid driver’s license
- Minimum age: 17 years at the time of assignment
- Passing scores on one of the following:
- Accuplacer
- ACT
How long is the program?
This is a 5-year apprenticeship that includes:
- 9,000 total hours
- 8,424 hours of on-the-job training with a skilled mentor
- 576 hours of paid related instruction (PRI)
- 164 hours of unpaid related instruction (URI)

Step 2: Get Connected – If you meet the qualifications, your application will be reviewed and considered for placement with a training sponsor.

Classes wherever you have an internet connection.
- An in-person career experience, such as an internship, practicum, or credit for prior learning, may be required.
- Some online courses may be held at specific dates/times.
- Day
- Classes between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
- Evening
- Classes between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
- Weekend
- A combination of online classes and Saturday and/or Sunday classes.
- Full-time
- 12 or more credits per term.
- Part-time
- Fewer than 12 credits per term.
