What does a plumber do?

Plumbers install, repair, and maintain piping systems in homes, businesses, and industrial buildings. In Wisconsin, all plumbing work must follow the state plumbing code. As an apprentice, you’ll learn how to:

  • Read and interpret plumbing blueprints and plans
  • Install and repair water, drainage, and heating systems
  • Use plumbing tools and equipment safely
  • Understand and follow the Wisconsin plumbing code
  • Work on both residential and commercial systems

This apprenticeship is offered in the following counties:
Brown, Door, Florence, Kewaunee, Marinette, Oconto, Menominee (WI), and Menominee (MI)

What are the qualifications?

To apply for the Plumber Apprenticeship, you’ll need:

  • A high school diploma or GED® (submit a copy)
  • A valid driver’s license (submit a copy)
  • Minimum age: 18 (or 17 with a high school diploma)
  • To pass one of the following assessments:
    • ACT: 15 in Math and 16 in Reading
    • Accuplacer Classic: 66 in Arithmetic, 33 in Algebra, 66 in Reading
    • Accuplacer Next Gen: 237 in Arithmetic, 235 in QAS, 244 in Reading

How long is the program?

This apprenticeship takes 5 years and includes:

  • 8,000 total hours
  • 7,600 hours of on-the-job training with a skilled plumber
  • 500 hours of paid related instruction (day school)
  • 260 hours of non-paid related instruction (night school – 80% attendance required)

Training may include First Aid/CPR, OSHA safety, blueprint reading, and welding for pipefitting.

Step 1: Apply – Complete the plumbing apprenticeship application and meet the qualifications listed above.
Step 2: Interview – Qualified applicants will be invited to meet with the Apprenticeship Committee.
Step 3: Get Your Letter – If selected, you’ll receive a Letter of Introduction to begin your journey.
