X-Ray Service Technician - Certificate
The Biomedical X-Ray Service Technician advanced technical certificate would build upon skills gained in the Biomedical Electronics Technology AAS. To move into biomed specializations, which provide greater economic rewards, additional training is needed. Opportunities in the installation, maintenance and repair of imaging equipment are growing. This is a unique program offered in the WTCS system, and is a valuable opportunity compared to the limited private options available. Many biomed technicians would be able to advance into imaging specializations with the training we are recommending in the Biomedical X-Ray Service Technician Advanced Technical Certificate. This certificate will cover the competencies required to service X-Ray equipment and provide foundational training on digital radiography services. These competencies include safety requirements for servicing X-Ray imaging equipment, how to read an X-Ray and diagnose root cause for poor image quality, and measuring the X-Ray tube performance. By engaging with imaging services industry experts, we will be able to develop a certificate that will allow Biomeds the opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge to move into imaging specializations. This program would also provide the skills necessary for other electro-mechanical technicians who may need to maintain X-Ray equipment in other environments such as airports, dentist offices, and welding inspection services.

- Practice appropriate radiation and equipment safety in the process of resolving equipment issues

- Diagnose problematic medical system concerns through the application of appropriate testing tools and methodologies with appropriate documentation

- Curriculum Note: Students must earn a "C" or higher in X-Ray Tube Operations, Fundamentals of Imaging Equipment, Image Detector Technology and Its Management, Foundations of Image Quality, and Advanced Imaging Modality Concepts.
Course Descriptions
Introduction to medical imaging systems such as X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, and CT. (Prerequisite: 10-605-211, Biomedical Instrumentation 1; Corequisites: 10-605-214, Medical Networking; 10-605-213, Biomedical Instrumentation 2; Prerequisite and Corequisites do not apply to the X-Ray Service Technician Advanced Technical Certificate)
Course Typically Offered: SpringFocuses on the x-ray tube assembly and associated components including beam restriction, basic atomic and geometric principles of tube operation, methods to limit exposures, filament characteristics, and x-ray room design. (Prerequisite: 10-605-206, Medical Imaging)
Course Typically Offered: SpringAnalyzes the operation of x-ray images and the inter-relationship of exposure factors and conditions. (Prerequisites: 10-605-216, X-Ray Tube Physics)
Course Typically Offered: FallAnalyzes image receptor technologies to help differentiate between CR and DR and their characteristics from a service perspective. Emphasis will be placed on thin-film transistor (TFT) technology and its management. (Prerequisites: 10-605-217, Fundamentals of Imaging Equipment Operation)
Course Typically Offered: FallDiscusses methods and measures to assess medical image quality of various imaging modalities. Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) and its component factors will be a focus of discussion, which includes the appropriate test equipment and methodologies. (Prerequisite: 10-605-218, Image Detector Technology and Its Management)
Course Typically Offered: SpringExplores advanced imaging modalities including, CT scanning, magnetic resonance (MR) scanning, medical sonography, and fluoroscopy, and how each contributes to the concept of diagnostic yield (DY). Image data management and networking will also be discussed. (Prerequisite: 10-605-219, Foundations of Image Quality)
