NWTC Marinette Hosts Bike Rodeo
Northeast Wisconsin Technical College Marinette, in collaboration with Marinette County Public Health, is hosting its first bike rodeo event on Saturday, May 1 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Led by NWTC’s Marinette nursing program students, the goal of this event is to ensure that children in the area will be able start the summer biking season safely.
“The nursing students are excited for this opportunity to make a positive impact within their own community,” said Lynda Rastall, NWTC Marinette nursing instructor. “As part of the student’s Service-Learning project, they have been engaged throughout the entire process from planning, coordinating, and spreading the word.”
The event will give away free bike helmets to youth attendees from ages [insert]thanks to a grant provided by the M&M Area Community Foundation (MMACF).
In addition to free youth helmets, there will be a non-competitive safety skills course, a station for kids to learn the rules of the road, and a chance to learn bike safety inspection tips.
According to the National Safety Council, bike helmets reduce the risk of a head injury by more than 50%. “It’s wonderful to see grant funding from local donors so that the children of our community are prepared to bike safely this summer,” Rastall added. “It has also been great to see students across our departments working together on this project. Electro-Mechanical students will be there in attendance as well to help with the bike inspection tips.”
The event will take place in the back parking lot of NWTC Marinette campus at 1601 University Drive.
No registration is required. The event is free. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and a release of liability must be signed before participation. COVID precautions will be followed. Should there be rain, the new date will be Wednesday, May 5 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the same location and will be announced on local radio and on the NWTC Marinette Facebook page.
