Great Lakes Energy Education Center takes shape at NWTC

Beam-setting ceremony today is the first public look at the site; attendees are invited to make their mark on the building!


NWTC will hold a beam-setting ceremony today, Monday, June 26 for the new Great Lakes Energy Education Center ®, currently under construction at the NWTC-Green Bay campus. A beam-setting ceremony celebrates the placing of the highest beam in a structure. At today's event, attendees will sign the beam that the College will place atop an elevator shaft.

Reporters, invited guests and the public are encouraged  to sign the beam before it is put into place, celebrate the new construction and learn more about the power generation, distribution and conservation degree programming that will be offered at the center. NWTC President Dr. Jeff Rafn, faculty and staff, current students and local employers will be on hand to talk about energy trends, local job demand and new power technology that is affecting Northeast Wisconsin.

What it is: The Great Lakes Energy Education Center® will be an energy-efficient 30,000-square-foot facility located on the northwest corner of NWTC’s Green Bay campus. It will house programs in power generation, transmission and management. It will be powered by renewable energy and will be a showcase of energy-efficient design, monitoring and management technologies. Expected completion: Early spring 2018.

Why it’s significant:

The Great Lakes Energy Education Center at NWTC is designed to be zero net energy capable, meaning that its annual energy consumption will be roughly equal to the renewable energy generated on site once all systems are installed.
