GREEN BAY – Northeast Wisconsin Technical College student Ryan Boyer is the 2015 Coca-Cola New Century Scholar for Wisconsin. His application received highest score out of all applicants from the state.

“It means the world to me. It’s an honor to have the top score in the entire state. This is the first real award I have ever won,” said Boyer.

Boyer graduated from Green Bay West High School in 2005. After working odd jobs for years, he knew he needed a degree and enrolled in NWTC in the spring of 2013.

“I knew that I needed an education to push myself to new heights,” he said.

And he did. Boyer is graduating NWTC with a 3.85 GPA— he added, it would be a 4.0, but he received a B in one science class.

“My instructors at NWTC pushed me to want to succeed. Going to college and choosing NWTC was the best decision of my life,” said Boyer.

His instructors and advisors also encouraged him to apply to be Coca-Cola New Century Scholar. 1,700 college students from across the country applied. Only 50 winners are chosen— one from each state.

Applicants are evaluated on grades, leadership skills, activities and a written essay. Boyer wrote his essay about his work to increase awareness about cyber bullying and domestic violence.

Boyer will receive a $2,000 scholarship, which he will use to help with tuition costs as he continues on to receive his four year degree in Marketing. He will also be recognized at the American Association of Community College’s Annual Convention in April.
