NWTC 5 Tips: How to give back this holiday season

Kara Leiterman

Tuesday December 1, 2015
Black Friday and Cyber Monday have come and gone. As consumers share stories of deals and purchases, an international online effort wants people to spend a day giving back. It is known as Giving Tuesday.

Since 2012, December 1 is a day dedicated to donating and volunteering.  Rachel Aderholdt, service-learning specialist at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College has five ways to give back not only on Giving Tuesday, but also throughout the holiday season.

1. Donate to food banks

  • Food banks are especially important during the winter months and holidays. They ensure that people under the poverty line have access to food. Many food banks post wish lists of simple items that could be purchased during one of your shopping trips, or you could simply check your cupboard for unexpired foods that you don’t have plans of using.

2. Invite someone over

  • You don’t necessarily need to invite someone when you celebrate with family, but the holidays are a terrible time for loneliness. Invite someone to share in a meal, or even just coffee and conversation.

3. Make extra

  • When you are baking for the holidays, make extra cookies, pies, or any other holiday treat to give to someone in need, perhaps an elderly neighbor.

4. Share your time

  •  Sharing your time does not cost you a thing, and there is so much you can do.
  • Volunteer Center – The Volunteer Center of Brown County is a resource, which can help you find ways to donate your time.

5. Adopt a family

  • Make the holidays possible for who could not otherwise afford to celebrate by “adopting” children and families in need during the holidays.
