NWTC receives $2,000 grant to fund project

Menominee, Mich., and Marinette area women in need now have a new way to pursue a rewarding career - thanks to a $2,000 grant from the M&M Area Community Foundation Women’s Giving Circle and the Mary L. Staudenmaier Fund.

The Northeast Wisconsin Technical College Educational Foundation recently received the grant to help establish the Starting Over Project for low-income Marinette and Menominee county women who are experiencing job loss, divorce, separation, or other life-changing events. The project provides accessibility through scholarships to the Nursing Assistant program at the NWTC Marinette campus so that the women can enter the nursing profession to support themselves and their families.

“We are grateful to the M&M Area Community Foundation Women’s Giving Circle and Ms. Staudenmaier for helping us to provide funding for students in financial need,” said Crystal Heckel, NWTC development specialist. “The Starting Over Project allows adult women who are facing challenges to access the education and training they need to ultimately secure a higher paying position.”

An ongoing program in Brown, Door, Oconto, Kewaunee, and Shawano counties, this is the first time that the Starting Over Project is available to Marinette and Menominee county women. Scholarships are now available and are being awarded as needed on a first-come, first-served basis.

About the NWTC Nursing Assistant Program

Nursing Assistant is a three-credit, 120-hour program that prepares graduates to perform basic nursing tasks under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse in a nursing home, home health environment, or hospital setting. With additional education, a certified nursing assistant can advance to become a licensed practical nurse or registered nurse or go on to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing. With each subsequent rung of the nursing career ladder, there are more opportunities for better paying jobs.
