Medical Lab Tech Students win big at statewide conference

With their fifth championship in seven years, students in Northeast Wisconsin Technical College’s Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program cemented their standing as a dynasty during the MLT Student Bowl at the annual American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science - Wisconsin Spring Conference. The competition – which unfolded over the evening of April 1 at the Milwaukee Airport Crowne Plaza - pitted seven of the state’s top technical college programs against one another in a battle of medical knowledge.quiz bowl.jpg

In the end, like the Chicago Bulls of the 1990’s and the 1970’s Pittsburgh Steelers, NWTC’s MLT students would not be denied. Through three heated elimination rounds, the team of Rachel Kolb, Emily Stolt, Brittany Catalano and Rob Nackers dominated the completion, culminating in a dramatic win over Chippewa Falls Technical College to take the championship.

“This particular group of students is outstanding,” said Medical Laboratory Technician Program Director Patti Moore, who attended the conference along with fellow MLT instructor Debbie Heinritz.  “They’re motivated, and they really dominated the [Student Bowl].”

The Student Bowl wasn’t the only competition where NWTC students found success at the statewide conference. In a poster competition for the MLT Case Study category, NWTC students swept the top three spots, with 1st place going to Brenda Hubbard, 2nd place to Brittany Catalano, and 3rd place to Rob Nackers.

In a poster competition for the MLT Literature Review category, Sara Gust was awarded 2nd place.
