Student Life to present ‘Witness for Peace: Human Rights’

 10/7/2011

 Ann Malvitz

Thursday, October 13 – 11:30 a.m., Green Bay campus

(Green Bay)  Nancy Garcia from the Center for the Orientation of Migrants (COMI) in Oaxaca, Mexico, will present “Witness for Peace: Human Rights” next week at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. The one-hour presentation will be held Thursday, October 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Student Center Commons on the Green Bay campus.

“Witness for Peace” is intended to help individuals see the human face of those forced to leave their homes and native culture due to economic displacement, fueled by the U.S. government’s trade and military aid policies in Latin America. Garcia will speak about migration trends in Oaxaca (as a place of origin, transit, and return) and about the experience of migrants from Central America as they travel across Mexico. Recently, she has been active in events organized in Oaxaca to bring attention to the violence and dangers that Central American migrants face on their way north.

Part of the NWTC Student Life Food for Thought Series, the event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. A complimentary lunch will be available for NWTC students; NWTC staff and the general public are welcome to bring their own lunches or purchase food in the Commons.
