English-language learners complete three-year journey to degree

 Rodee Schneider

A program that combines basic education, job training and English-language instruction honored its first graduating class of Medical Assistant students during a celebration at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College Monday, Feb. 10.

The nine students in NWTC’s Career Pathways Medical Assistant program attended class every Saturday for the last three years to complete their coursework and clinical requirements. The students, native Spanish-speakers originally from Mexico, Puerto Rico and Honduras, received their Healthcare Services Certificate after the first year of the program. Four completed their GED while simultaneously taking college courses, a unique feature of NWTC’s Career Pathways program. Three graduated with highest honors, and another with honors.

"With a home, husband and kids, it’s been really hard, but fun at the same time. But [the instructors] never let us quit. I’m proud of myself. I’ve learned a lot. This is what I want to do with my life," said Rose, one of the graduates.

NWTC’s Career Pathways offers seven program options for English Language Learners (ELL) and Basic Education students, including Welding, Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant, Office Professional, Accounting, Human Resources and Health Care Business Services.
