17th Annual Community Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday to be held Saturday, January 14

(Green Bay) Area residents from diverse cultural backgrounds united recently to celebrate the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Featuring multicultural dance performances, music, and the inspiring words of Dr. King, the 17th Annual Community Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday was held Saturday, January 14, 2012, 10:30 a.m.-12:00 noon, in the Student Center, on the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College Green Bay campus.

The program included African, Hmong and Indian dance performances, Native American music, and a reading of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Angela Kelly, WLUK-Fox 11 reporter and weekend anchor for Good Day Wisconsin, served as this year’s mistress of ceremonies. A light lunch was served at a reception immediately following the program.

Brown County and Oneida Nation school children once again participated in a poster/essay/poetry contest that illustrates this year’s theme, “Reflecting Back, Looking Forward.” Contest winners were announced at the celebration.

The celebration was organized by representatives of Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, St. Norbert College, United Hmong and Asian American Community Center, University of Wisconsin Green Bay, and community volunteers.

Major contributors of this event included Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, Procter & Gamble, Schreiber Foods, and the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. Additional support for the celebration has been provided by a variety of organizations that were recognized during the celebration.
