 Field Experience 1

Field Experience 1 is a class designed to introduce the student to the field AODA Human Services by providing the student with actual work experience in an AODA human service agency.  Students will provide a minimum of 144 hours of service to the agency of their choice, with direct supervision provided by the agency supervisor.  The student will work with the agency to define the individual learning objectives to be obtained during the course of the internship.  The goal is to facilitate the student's transition into the work world.  Students will also have 18 hours of classroom lecture.

 

Course Competencies

To be successful when you obtain your job after graduation, your employer will want you to have certain skills.  This course has specific competencies or tasks that you must be able to do and demonstrate prior to completion of the course so that you are successful when you get the job that requires them.  In this course, the course competencies that you must master at a C level are:

  1. Attain first- hand experience by serving a minimum of 144 hours in a human   service agency.
  2. Practices effective communication strategies and skills.
  3. Employs basic human services helping skills.
  4. Demonstrate effective time management skills.
  5. Demonstrate cultural sensitivity through non-bias, non-prejudice professional behavior.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of ethical and legal issues in human services.
  7. Exercise supervision and consultation opportunities regularly.
  8. Formulate an action plan to recognize and address worker self care in the human services field.
  9. Create a plan for entry into the human service profession.

 

Learning Activites

While completing the Field 1 course, students will complete 144 hours of simulated or actual occupational experience.  Students will also complete weekly learning activities that are meant to enhance the Field 1 course experience.  These weekly learning activities include:

Weekly Documentation Logs

Weekly Discussion Board Posts or In Class Discussions

Blog postings to develop online professional presence

There are specific written assessments for Field 1 to help you demonstrate the course competencies.  For Field 1 you are expected to complete the following Assessment Activities:

Resume

Cover Letter

Field Experience Summary

Final Portfolio
