Does a student have to be failing the class to get tutoring?
No. Tutoring services are provided using funding from the Carl Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act grant. According to Perkins guidelines, students who are not attaining academic competencies for a specific course can be eligible for tutoring. It is up to individual instructor discretion as to whether or not a student is attaining the academic competencies for a course. We ask students and instructors to wait until there is some tangible work completed in classes to fully determine if the student is meeting class competencies. However, some students are eligible for tutoring help starting the first day of class with the approval of an academic counselor.
How does a student request a tutor?
When requesting a tutor, the student needs to fill out a Tutor Request form. They should take it to their instructor to have the instructor sign the form and verify whether or not the student is meeting course competencies. The student will then bring the completed tutor request form back to Mary Schreiner in SC138. Mary will then identify a tutor for the student.
Can a student ask friends/family to tutor them at home?
Tutoring must take place on campus. To become a tutor, you must complete an application form and all other forms for employment. If the person meets the qualifications, they can tutor. NWTC pays tutors $8/hour for 1on 1 tutoring and $9/hour for tutoring 2 or more students.
