1. Why do I need to take a Skills Assessment?

NWTC is committed to assisting every student in meeting his or her learning goals. NWTC uses the Skills Assessment as a pre-program assessment to determine entry-level program readiness.

2. Who is required to take a Skills Assessment?

All students entering an Associate Degree or Technical Diploma program must complete the Skills Assessment as part of the admissions process. Students with special testing needs or considerations should contact the Special Needs Office prior to testing.

3. Do all Students have to take the Skills Assessment?

Applicants who have a diploma from an accredited four-year college/university or an Associate Degree from a Wisconsin technical College, or who have scored well enough on an approved standardized test within three years of entering an NWTC program, may not have to take the Skills Assessment. If you have further questions, please contact an NWTC Counselor at (920) 498-5444 or toll-free at (800) 422-NWTC, ext. 5444, for more information.

4. What is the Skills Assessment?

The Skills Assessment assesses the individual's skill level in the areas of arithmetic, algebra, reading comprehension, and sentence skills. The assessments are taken on a computer and are timed. The assessment scores are provided immediately upon completion. Program benchmark scores.

5. How can I do my best?

  • Arrive early in order to locate the Assessment Center, be rested and ready to concentrate.
  • Turn off any cell phones or pagers.
  • Make sure all materials needed for your test are available before you begin testing.
  • Ask any questions you may have before the assessment begins.
  • Notify a test examiner if you are being disturbed during the test.
  • Take your time and answer each question to the best of your ability.

6. When and where can I take an Assessment / Test?

The Skills Assessments are given at the NWTC-Green Bay Campus, and also given at the following locations.

7. What is required in order to test?

Picture Identification, Fees (If Applicable), and pencils, scratch paper, and calculators will be provided when applicable.

8. Do I have to pay to take an Assessment / Test?

Yes, view the Assessment / Testing Fees.

9. Must the program Benchmark Scores be met in order to be admitted into the program?

Most health programs and the Paralegal program require that program benchmarks be met or a minimum ACT composite score be met. For all other programs, it is not required that the program benchmarks be met in order to be accepted into the program. However, it is strongly recommended that candidates improve their skills prior to program entry to be ready to handle their course work. In some cases, upgrading of skills can be done simultaneously with course work.
