STUDENT CHECKLIST FOR NWTC OR ANY COLLEGE

Your junior year is the time to begin your college search. Careful preparation before your senior year can take a lot of the worry out of choosing the college that's right for you. Here are some guidelines to help your search along.

IN YOUR HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR YEAR

JANUARY

Talk to your guidance counselor about college entrance requirements. Make sure the classes you're planning to take your senior year are academically challenging. Colleges like to see as many solid classes as possible on your transcript.

FEBRUARY

What do you hope to get out of a college education? While "undecided" is the most common major among college freshmen, it is a good idea to start reading college guides to see what's available. Meanwhile, check with your school's counseling office about spring dates for the ACT or SAT I.

MARCH

Register for April, May or June standardized test dates. Check with colleges to see which tests they require. You may need to take both the SAT I and the ACT as well as SAT II subject tests. Watch for information which can help you prepare for these tests.

APRIL

If you took the PSAT last fall, you will be getting plenty of mail from colleges. Start to really consider what different schools have to offer and how closely they match your interests. If you haven't heard from some schools you're interested in, call them and ask for information.

MAY

Start to organize your search. You may want to keep a separate folder of material from each college you're considering. On a single piece of paper, make a comparative chart of the most important offerings at each school. Start another chart listing critical deadlines for applications and financial aid.

JUNE-JULY

Visit the top few campuses that interest you. Summer is a busy time for college visits, so call at least two weeks ahead to plan a tour, an information session with an admissions representative, and an interview if one is required or recommended for admission.

AUGUST

Colleges generally mail out applications in September. You'll be busy once school starts, so call the schools you're interested in and make sure you are on their mailing lists.

IN YOUR HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR YEAR

SEPTEMBER

At NWTC - begin applying the day after Labor Day, especially if you want to be accepted for one of our high demand programs. Please check out our Admissions information page.

For undecided students - If you weren't happy with your standardized test results, plan on retaking the SAT I or ACT this fall. Consider how you can improve your score with simple aids such as flash cards and review books or more serious help such as test prep classes.

OCTOBER

Attend any college fairs at your school or nearby. They are good opportunities to get information first hand from admissions representatives. If you are planning to apply early decision to your first-choice school, fill out your application.

NOVEMBER

At NWTC - Get your application into NWTC as soon as possible, if you haven't already done so.
Keep a file of all communication you receive. Keep checklists of what is required for admission
to make sure you don't forget anything. Ask about scholarships you might be eligible for.

Begin to prepare your applications for admission. Ask your teachers to write recommendations for you and start to work on your essay. Keep checklists of what each school requires, to make sure you don't forget anything. Ask about scholarships you might be eligible for.

DECEMBER

Begin to gather financial aid forms and double check deadlines for each college. Photocopy all of your applications before you mail them in case they get lost. Make sure your high school guidance office knows all the schools you're applying to, so they can mail out your transcripts.

JANUARY

File your FAFSA ( Free Application for Federal Student Aid) with your family's tax information as soon as possible after January 1. You must file a FAFSA to be eligible for financial aid at ANY college that you plan to attend. There will be a place on the FAFSA to select which colleges you want the information sent to. Plan to call colleges in February to make sure they have received all of your information. Congratulations! You've applied to college!
