How much will the program cost?

The following costs are associated with application to and completion of the program:

  • $30 non-refundable application fee, if applicable.
  • $2800 tuition (approximate figure pending annual adjustment by the Dept. of Justice)
  • Background Check - $100 fee (refundable only upon cancellation of session by NWTC)
  • Uniform - approximately $300

A note about tuition and residency: The $2800 tuition figure applies to Wisconsin and Minnesota residents as well as those residing in Delta, Dickinson, Gogebic, Iron and Menominee counties in Upper Michigan. All other applicants are considered out-of-state residents; at this time, out-of-state tuition for this program is approximately $9800.00.

What supplies will I need?

You will need a pair black boots and athletic shoes. A mouth guard and protective cup are also required. You may use NWTC's Glock semi-auto pistols with gun belts for firearms training.

A current e-mail address and access to a computer (particularly a laptop) and printer is necessary for completing the curriculum. To effectively access electronic course materials, your computer should have Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat Reader. (Acrobat Reader is available for download free from http://www.adobe.com.) If you do not own or have access to this equipment or the Internet, you may use the computers in the NWTC Library, the Public Safety computer lab, or the Cyber Cafe.

Is financial aid available?

Unfortunately, because the length of this program is less than one semester, it is not eligible for state or federal funding. However, NWTC has recently established a payment plan for student tuition. For information on the program, visit http://www.nwtc.edu/PaymentPlan/ . Any questions regarding the plan should be directed to Michelle Honzik at 920.498.5609.

May I use Veteran's Benefits to pay for the program?

Yes. You must first pay tuition; you will then receive reimbursement in installments through the GI Bill. For details, contact Kathy Schubring in Enrollment Services at (920) 498-6292.

Effective July 1, 2007, program and material fees will be waived for qualified veterans.

How can I find housing near campus?

If you live a distance from campus, you have two options. You may choose to book a hotel room Sunday through Thursday of each week. Visit the hotel page for a list of area hotels that offer special rates to NWTC. Green Bay available housing.

How do I apply?

24 applicants may be accepted into the program. The application packet is an Adobe Acrobat PDF file. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader you can download it for free from http://www.adobe.com.

Please print, fill out and forward all application materials by the dates indicated. We will receive your transcripts and background check materials under separate cover.

Complete and submit the following:

  • NWTC Application
  • State Application

If you have never attended NWTC or applied to or attended the college prior to April 1, 1999, a $30 application fee is required.

If you are not currently employed as an officer, you must also complete the following:

  • Have your physician sign the attached referral form and return it to NWTC as noted on the Application Checklist. (You may not complete the physical fitness assessment without submitting this form.)
  • Submit to a background check by completing the background checking forms and sending the release forms and fee directly to CCI Investigative Services at the address indicated below.
  • Forward aTranscript Request to each college you have attended (High school transcripts are not required.)

Send background checking forms with your payment directly to CCI Investigative Services, 2129 S. Oneida, Suite 121, Green Bay, WI 54304.

What will the background check cover?

The background check will gather the following information:

  • Verification of educational transcripts
  • Employment verification for any employment (going back no more than seven years)
  • Wisconsin Criminal History check
  • Local Police Records check
  • Past residence police records check
  • DOT records check
  • Credit check

We realize that $100 is a relatively high price to pay for the background check; however, the information gained is a critical part of the law enforcement hiring process. The results of a positive background check will tell potential employers that you are a viable candidate and may expedite the hiring process itself.

Should NWTC cancel the session to which you apply, you will receive a refund of the background check fee. If you elect to attend the next session, you will have the option of completing the check or receiving a refund.

We encourage those who are accepted in the academy to begin applying to agencies over the course of the program. This may result in your employment in law enforcement upon graduation from the academy. Current law enforcement openings across the state.

WHAT WILL THE FITNESS ASSESSMENT COVER?

We conduct the Fitness Assessment to ensure that you may safely participate in tactical training. Your overall fitness score may be used as a benchmark for fitness training over the course of the session should you be accepted in the program. These results may also help in identifying lifestyle strategies that will enhance your fitness.

Events covered in the Fitness Assessment include the following:

  • 12-minute step test
  • trunk flexibility evaluation
  • bent knee sit-ups
  • push-ups
  • pull-ups
  • squat thrust
  • bench press
  • standing broad jump

Qualification for the program is determined based on an overall fitness level rather than the results of any one event.

What will the curriculum cover?

In addition to 54 hours of physical fitness conditioning for which you will earn two credits, state-required subjects comprise the balance of the academy curriculum.

What will happen after I submit my application?

You will be notified regarding the status of your application as soon as possible following our receipt of all your application materials (each item listed on the Application Checklist). We will contact qualified individuals as well as those not qualified at the time of application. For those invited to continue the application process, we will provide details on the interview and Physical Fitness Assessment. We will also advise applicants if they will be required to complete a reading/writing assessment.

The application process is in fact a two-phase process: You are first evaluated on the basis of your academic record. If the number of your credits and your grades meet the requirements, you are admitted to the college and are eligible to complete coursework at NWTC. Your acceptance to the Law Enforcement Academy, however, is not final until you have completed the fitness assessment, interview and drug screen and the results of your background check are satisfactory.

If your academic and other qualifications meet the program entrance requirements, your acceptance into the program will be considered final after you have successfully completed the following:

  • Personal interview
  • Physical Fitness Assessment
  • Drug screen
  • Background check
  • Reading and writing assessment (if required)

After successfully completing these steps in the application process, you will receive notification of your acceptance and information on the orientation session.

During the orientation session, you will review and be asked to sign the Academy Rules of Conduct. At that time, you will also purchase your Academy uniform. If you are a self-sponsored individual, you will be billed for tuition following registration. It is not necessary to pay tuition in full at the time of registration.

If you are qualified for the Academy but the program has been filled, your name will be placed on a waiting list and you will be given first consideration for the next Academy session.
