| Name: Julie Peterson Company: Integrys Business Support, LLC
Title: Designer Specialist
Education: Bachelor of Arts Degree – Marketing, Lakeland College, Bachelor of Arts Degree – Business, Lakeland College
Work Hours: Salaried position with basic expectation of 40-45 hours per week. Normal work hours are 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Overtime varies based on the specific needs of the job at any given time. Weekend and evening work to support system maintenance and upgrades is also an expectation of this position.
How I arrived at my present position: About 12 years ago I took a position within the Information Technology department at the Help Desk. I spent about 2 years at the Help Desk when our company decided to investigate the value of an intranet. I volunteered to create a pilot Web site for the Help Desk. When the company formalized an eBusiness Department in 1998, I was selected to fill the position of the Intranet Coordinator. As our intranet progressed in size and the infrastructure became more technical, my position continued to grow and challenge me.
What you don’t know: Not all Web designers spend all day laying out Web pages and making graphics. As a coordinator of an intranet, my world is much different from that of my counterpart who works on the Internet. Here are just some of the things our group is responsible for on a regular basis:
- Design overall look and feel for the entire intranet based on corporate marketing standards
- Research and provide tools for those people that write content for the intranet
- Provide support on tool set for content writers
- Provide consulting services to business units on content, navigation and site re-designs
- Act as a liaison between the end user and the application programmers on new applications
- Set standards for the look and feel of the intranet as well as all other internally facing Web applications
- Act as project manager for new software implementations related to the intranet, Web applications and large site re-designs
- Perform usability testing in formal and informal environment
- Evaluate Web site statistics to enhance design
- Prepare budget information for future needs
- Prepare documentation and procedures
- Prepare communications
- Present new ideas to stakeholders, steering committees, leaders and senior staff
- Research new technologies
- Participate in industry conferences and user groups as attendee, presenter and facilitator
