NWTC’s Public Safety Division is planning to offer special training this spring to raise awareness of suicide among police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel.
“In Harm’s Way: Suicide Intervention/Prevention for Public Safety Officers,” will be held May 28-29 on the NWTC Green Bay campus. To offer the training at low cost or no cost to participating officers, NWTC is currently working to obtain outside funding.

Chris Madson, NWTC public safety coordinator, said the training is needed “to protect our protective services personnel.”
“Even though many of us don’t realize it, we have interpersonal conflicts that can lead to fatal results, and we have to address that,” Madson said. “With this training, officers will not only learn the basic communication skills for suicide intervention, they will learn to help prevent suicides by developing peer-support systems that are unique to their departments.”
The two-day session will feature Dell Hackett, from Law Enforcement Wellness Associates, who will present QPR (Question, Persuade and Refer) for Law Enforcement. The training will also cover suicide statistics, myth busting, accessing mental health resources, and reducing the stigma associated with suicide that impacts the surviving family, friends, and coworkers.
