Contractors can meet new state licensure requirements through upcoming courses from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College and the Brown County Homebuilders Association.
The courses are approved by the Department of Commerce for the Dwelling Contractor Qualifier Credential.
This year for the first time, all contractors must have the Qualifier Credential in order to pull a permit - both new and "grandfathered" builders and remodelers. The requirement affects all permits pulled starting Jan. 1, 2008. (For details about the qualifier credential, call 608-242-5155, ext 18.)
To maintain the credential, contractors must earn 12 hours of Commerce-approved continuing education every two years. Courses can cover construction, development, safety, business practices, sales and marketing, and other relevant topics. New contractors must take 12 hours of specific Commerce-approved coursework and pass a test to earn the Qualifier Credential, then follow maintenance requirements.
