Financial Aid Application: Get the Money You Need for College

Financial aid for students is more than just "free money" and "loans." There are several types of financial aid and many benefits that can reduce costs and help cover living expenses during your college years.

  1. Qualify for grants: Find out if you are eligible for college grants that do not require repayment. Grants can make a significant difference in financing your education.
  2. Access scholarships: Like grants, scholarships do not have to be paid back. Many college scholarships also require applicants to apply for financial aid; complete the FAFSA to increase your chances.
  3. Qualify for flexible loans: Affordable loans (with low monthly repayment plans) are available if grants and scholarships don't cover your costs. Loan repayment starts six months after you stop attending college or begin taking fewer than six credits.
  4. Earn Money: Some students can qualify for the Federal Work-Study Program, where you can earn money to help pay for college expenses.

Financial Aid: Myths Vs. Reality

  • Income isn't the only factor.  Financial assistance considers family size, age, and college credits too.
  • Don't assume you miss out.  Apply - it's the only way to know for sure.
  • Financial aid explores grants & work-study too.  Loans are optional - you choose the amount you need.
  • 30 minutes can save you big.  Apply for financial aid - it's worth your time.
  • Apply early for best options.  Avoid late fees and get considered for all funding. You will have an easier time staying on track in your courses too!

Fact: The average NWTC student who graduated high school in 2023 and applied for financial aid received $3,252 in scholarships and grants. The average tuition and books cost was $2,271.

Tuition and Fees: How Much Will Your Education Cost?

Several factors affect the cost of your education, including tuition, fees, and living expenses. Tuition rates can vary depending on the program you choose, and there may be fees for materials and supplies. Understanding how these costs are calculated can help you plan for your expenses. Fortunately, NWTC provides tools to estimate your education costs.
